平面作品が生まれたときから光は希望として絵画の中で重要な位置付けでしたが、現在では欲望や監視など様々な役割を持った光を浴びています。見える光と見えない光、生への賛歌と絶望。私たちはいつも光の反射する表層に踊らされながら、自らもその表層の一部として生きています。表層的とはある種侮蔑的な意味合いを帯びる言葉ですが、表層なき真理というものも、なかなか理解しづらいものであるように思います。他者の存在や人生、歴史を背負ったような面影のような、表層として絵が描ければと思いながら、四方八方から飛び込んでくる光や、その光に乗って飛び込んでくる様々な声を毎日浴びて、今ここでしかわたしにしか描けない作品とは何かを考えています。

In painting, “light” has long been treated as a symbol of hope. Yet in our time, its nature has become more complex. Light is an object of desire, a mechanism of surveillance, and, to me, the very surface that surrounds and shapes our daily existence. Visible and invisible light, the shadows it casts, hymns and despair, others and their histories—all of these layer into the surface of an image, which deeply draws my attention.
In my practice, I approach light not simply as a phenomenon to be depicted, but as a relationship to be explored. The voices and gazes I receive each day are, to me, further forms of reflection within that light. While the notion of the “surface” is often regarded as superficial or even pejorative, for me it is a membrane—an image that retains the traces and memories of others. It is a point of connection between what cannot be seen and the present we inhabit.
I continue to ask myself what kind of images can only be painted by the person I am, here and now. I seek to capture and fix, within the space of painting, the surfaces that quietly emerge from the light. I believe that painting, while existing on a flat plane, holds a depth of time and structure—and serves as a soft mirror that reflects the complexity of the contemporary.
